Hello all. Posting material daily to the Univer6 gameworld. Check it out. Let me know what you need, want, wish for, etc. Just letting you all know that progress is being
made.
Hero or Godling?
It is very hard as a Gamemaster to continue to reward your
players with powerful, neat items and enhanced abilities.
Players get frustrated when their Egos can not ever hit that
advancing troll with their battleaxe. Frustration, coupled
with boredom, can be a GM's worst nightmare. Want to quit
gming forever? Piss your players off or bore them out of
their skulls. Most GMs allow quite a bit of advancement
within their games, to stave off this type of situation.
The problem is at what point is an Ego too powerful?
It can't be amusing for the player to not risk death in
combat and to obliterate their opponent with one hit.
Sure, we've all played Fallout 2 after the game ends and
done a little beserker in Vault City (ignore this if you'
ve never played Fallout 2), but it gets boring.
AD&D characters end up getting so powerful that a module
came out to support Demi-god characters. It's a good idea,
but without a risk there's no game.
So, how do you keep rewarding players without making
them Godlings? How bout fame? The more world-saving
an Ego does, the more popular he gets. This opens
up all kinds of adventure. Suppose the Ego is elected
king because he is such a famous hero? He then has
to sit and listen to townspeople bitch all day about
their neighbors. In the words of Conan, "...and his
crown sat on a troubled brow..."
I'm sure you can think of more. Remember: a roleplaying
game is a story. The more advanced the player becomes,
the more intricate the story should become. Don't sacrifice
this for a quick fix of Godling status.
