"Zero G is the closest to heaven I'll ever get." - Confucius Jackson, Last Words from Planet Folsom
Huge Freighters crawl from planet to planet, guided by shipping beacons, delivering and receiving cargo. Fractured behemoth ships, called Hulks, drift lifeless through the galaxies, victims of the Conquistador Era. Asteroids buzz like huge beehives with mining operation craft.
The discovery of Fission-All technology and the advancement of life support has made the universe a small place. Billions of people are in transit at any given moment; some visiting relatives on a planet across the galaxy; some working for slave wages on a freighter; some simply seeking adventure. Many become Zeros, addicted to weightlessness, their atrophied spines and musculature incapable of supporting their own body weight in a normal gravity.
The Modern Spaceship
All Interstellar craft have the following necessities built in:
Oxygen Plant
The Oxygen Plant uses a system of chemical 'scrubbers' that take in Carbon Dioxide, remove the carbon molecule, and recycle the Oxygen back into the atmosphere of the craft. The collected carbon is used in food production or is ejected into space.
Recycles
Toilets that process waste, retrieving the water and usable nutrients for backup food and water in the event of a systems failure. Gross, but if you get hungry or thirsty enough.
Heating Core
This a simple system that heats the ship, since space is freezing cold. Without this system, any heat in the ship would dissipate very quickly.
Vita-Sludge (Trademarked) Tanks
Vita-Sludge is a product invented by the Interstellar Merchantile Company (IMC). It contains all nutrients, proteins, and carbohydrates necessary to sustain human life. Looks like yellow spongecake, tastes like wet spongecake.
Gravity Gyro
This device, located in the center of the ship, creates a gravity field that the ship, having relatively tiny mass, would not have. Most gyros are set to standard Terran gravity, but Zeros tend to let them just gather dust.
Engine
Through a revolutionary technology developed by Bo'in called Fission-All, engines are powered by a nuclear power plant that can produce energy from the fission of any matter. Ships have "Matter Vents" on their exteriors that serve to collect cosmic dust and debris as the ship travels. This garbage is used as fuel for the reactor, providing virtually unlimited energy.
Space Travel
In this age, to be planetbound without a lift or ride into space is considered the equivalent of being marooned in the boondocks. The attitude is to get moving and keep moving.
Typically, distances in space are measured in sectors and quadrants. Sectors are equal to 100,000 miles. Quadrants are 100 sectors, or 10,000,000 Miles.
